Unit ConverterTemperature Converter

Convert temperature between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin. Unlike length or weight, temperature scales have different zero points, so a single multiplier will not work — the converter routes every value through Celsius to apply the 32-degree offset between Celsius and Fahrenheit and the 273.15 shift to Kelvin. This page opens on Celsius-to-Fahrenheit, the everyday weather conversion.

1 Celsius = 33.8 Fahrenheit

Conversions use standard SI/customary factors (e.g. 1 in = 0.0254 m). Temperature is converted through Celsius to handle its offset. A deterministic conversion, computed in your browser.

Why temperature needs an offset, not a ratio

Zero Celsius is the freezing point of water; zero Fahrenheit is far colder, and zero Kelvin is absolute zero. Because the scales start in different places, converting means shifting as well as scaling. Celsius to Fahrenheit multiplies by nine-fifths and adds 32; the reverse subtracts 32 first, then multiplies by five-ninths.

Kelvin shares Celsius's degree size but starts at absolute zero, so the conversion is a clean add or subtract of 273.15. Two quick anchors: water freezes at 0°C / 32°F / 273.15 K and boils at 100°C / 212°F / 373.15 K.

Questions

What is the formula for Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Fahrenheit = Celsius × 9/5 + 32. For example 20°C is 20 × 1.8 + 32 = 68°F.
How do I convert Celsius to Kelvin?
Add 273.15. Kelvin uses the same degree size as Celsius but starts at absolute zero, so 25°C is 298.15 K.
